Capital Campaign

The Morristown Centennial Library has been providing its community with services for almost 120 years. During that time, the population of our community has more than doubled. The number of the library's catalogued books has increased almost seven-fold and substantial alternative media have been added to the collection, including audiotapes, videos, periodicals, local newspaper archives and, of course, computers and internet access. In addition, "programming", or the provision of activities such as author readings, thematic seminars, and group discussions is a growing part of library services. A library is not just books anymore! But the library's physical capacity has remained pretty much the same as it was when the current building was constructed in 1913 -- and it¹s about to burst!!

Consequently, the Board of Trustees has initiated a capital campaign to raise funds for the construction of an additional 4792 sq. ft. of space as well as to carry out much needed renovations on the original building This new space will allow for better storage of and accessibility to the entire collection, the ability to offer programs for groups larger than 25 people, a community room for use by all organizations in the area, and handicapped access to the entire building.

The projected budget for this work is $1,893,173. It is the board's intention, if at all possible, to raise all the needed funds through private donations and grants. Initiated in the spring of 2007, the campaign is expected to run for three years. Donations can be made in a variety of ways, including cash contributions, donation of appreciated assets, bequests, and gifts-in-kind. Opportunities will be available to have library space and/or fixtures named for someone you wish to recognize or honor.

Anyone interested in discussing a gift to this campaign or exploring other opportunities for supporting this effort should contact any of the Board of Trustees or members of the library staff.
