Each year the Vermont Department of Libraries generously grants a number of books to public libraries in the state. I visited the DOL in Montpelier, and returned to Morrisville with 23 new books for youth of all ages. The donated books are indicated with an asterisk below, under "New Books." All books are on display at the library, so stop by and see what's available!

New Books

Recommendations from Morris the Morristown Centennial Library Moose

Hi, I'm Morris, and I live at the Morristown Centennial Library. You will see me sitting on top of the spinning book shelf in the children's room! We have lots of good books at the library. I want to tell you about some of my favorite new books!

Bear Flies High by Michael Rosen
A bear on the beach watches birds flying and wishes he could do the same. Four children find the bear and take him to an amusement park, where he can "fly" on roller coasters and other rides. The fun lasts all day and into the evening, where the children join the bear on the beach to watch birds fly again. Recommended for ages 4-8.

Can You Make a Scary Face? By Jan Thomas
The author of silly books such as Here Comes the Big Mean Dusty Bunny and Doghouse is back with this hilarious book. In the book you'll stand up, sit down, pretend to wiggle a bug off your nose, do the chicken dance, and lots more. A fun movement book!  Recommended for ages 2-5.

The Dollhouse Fairy by Jane Ray
Every Saturday morning, Rosy and her dad make tiny furnishings for the beautiful dollhouse he built her. But one Saturday, Rosy's dad has to go tot he hospital, and Rosy finds a fairy named Thistle in the dollhouse. Thistle has a broken wing, and it's up to Rosy to take care of her. When Rosy's dad returns from the hospital, she finds that Thistle has disappeared! Recommended for ages 4-9.

Featured Beginning Readers

Mercy Watson: Something Wonky This Way Comes by Kate DiCamillo
In the sixth book of the Mercy Watson series, Mr. and Mrs. Watson take their beloved "porcine wonder," Mercy, to the Bijou Drive-In to see "When Pigs Fly." At the Drive-In, Mercy smells delicious buttery popcorn, and takes off to find where the wonderful smell is coming from. A hilarious ruckus ensues, involving many of the characters seen in the earlier Mercy Watson books, such as Officer Tomilello, Francine Poulet, and the fireman, Ned and Lorenzo. Read the book to find out what happens on this "wonky" adventure! Recommended for ages 6-9.

Meggy is not happy in London, and finds it dirty, loud, and dangerous. But Meggy's father is an alechemist, whose job is transform metal into gold, and Meggy also sets out to transform her life for the better. Thirteen-year-old Samuel is at home in the wilderness surrounding his Pennsylvania home, until the Revolutionary War begins. Samuel returns home from a visit to the woods to find his house burned, his neighbors murdered, and his parents missing. Samuel tracks down his parents in British run New York, encountering the dangers and brutalities of war, with some help along the way. An honest depiction of war and heroism by an acclaimed author. Recommended for ages 11-14.

Featured Nonfiction

Summer Birds: The Butterflies of Maria Merian by Margarita Engle
This is the amazing true story of a girl growing up during the Middle Ages, when people believed that insects were evil, and were born from mud in a process called spontaneous generation. Maria Merian disagreed, and in secret studied caterpillars and their growth into "summer birds," or butterflies and moths. Maria documented the cycle in colorful paintings, which were later published in books. Recommended for ages 5-8.

Beautiful Ballerina by Marilyn Nelson
In a celebration of ballet and cultural diversity, two African American ballerinas are photographed in various lovely ballet poses, accompanied by inspiring, poetic text. Recommended for ages 3-7.
