Summer Birds: The
Butterflies of Maria Merian by Margarita Engle
This is the amazing true story of a girl growing up during the
Middle Ages, when people believed that insects were evil, and were
born from mud in a process called spontaneous generation. Maria

growth into "summer birds," or butterflies and moths. Maria
documented the cycle in colorful paintings, which were later
published in books. Recommended for ages 5-8.
Beautiful Ballerina

In a celebration of ballet and cultural diversity, two African
American ballerinas are photographed in various lovely ballet poses,
